Finish comparison
Water-based lacquer vs 2K PU
Both systems can protect wood. The difference is not only appearance — it is resistance, repair strategy, odour, application risk and how much abuse the surface must survive.
Water-based lacquer
Good for lower-odour indoor work and simpler DIY application. It can look natural and dry fast, but resistance to alcohol, heat and aggressive cleaning depends heavily on the exact product class.
2K PU lacquer
Usually the stronger option for worktops, commercial tables and epoxy-heavy surfaces. It requires stricter mixing, PPE and ventilation, but gives better chemical and mechanical resistance when applied correctly.
Quick decision
- Choose water-based lacquer for lower-risk indoor pieces with moderate use.
- Choose 2K PU for heavy-use tops, restaurants, kitchen zones and resin tables.
- On epoxy, always sand, clean and run an adhesion test before coating the final piece.
