Oil for wood and epoxy

Oil beautifully enhances wood, but epoxy resin is a non-absorbent substrate. In hybrid projects, the decision depends on whether you are finishing the wood, the resin, or the whole surface.

Wood epoxy test

How to choose

If the oil is meant for wood only, mask the resin border and remove any excess from the epoxy.

What to watch

If the oil has to cover the whole surface, an adhesion and appearance test is mandatory.

In practice

For working surfaces with resin, a lacquer or coating is more often the safer choice.

FAQ

Does oil soak into resin?

Not like into wood. Resin is non-absorbent, so the oil can stay on the surface and cause tackiness or streaks.

Can oil be used on a river table?

Yes, but most often as a finish on the wood. On the epoxy part, a test is needed.

When to pick lacquer instead of oil?

When you want a single even film across wood and resin, or when the project will be heavily used.
